Are there rules about building roads?

I built a house out in the swamp.  I want to build a road going into town.  The roads in town all look the same, with the same wood on the outside and maybe bricks on the inside?  Do I have to follow that same pattern, and if so can someone tell me what it is?

I'd like to have a store in town eventually too.  I know how to use chestshop.  Do I need to ask permission or just pick a spot?

I replied to Mel in-game, but I'll post here in case anyone has the same question.

The path is 4 blocks wide with the outer two blocks being polished andesite and the inner blocks being acacia logs/slabs.

You can build your shop anywhere, just make sure it looks good, and don't build behind the portals.
